In Remembrance, Our BC Highway of Heroes

Trans-Canada Highway between Surrey and Abbotsford
Remembering our Heroes

British Columbia is home to many heroes. Some have accomplished amazing feats, while others have paid the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for their country. And some have done both.

On June 9, 2011, the Trans-Canada Highway between 152 Street exit in Surrey and the Sumas exit in Abbotsford was dedicated to the memory of these extraordinary British Columbians, and to the families they left behind. This Highway of Heroes is a memorial and a tribute to these fallen soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan.

The highway is the second Highway of Heroes in Canada, with the first being the route between Canadian Forces Base Trenton and Toronto. That’s the route the funeral procession takes when the soldier’s body is returned to Canadian soil. This new Highway of Heroes doesn’t serve the same function, but it is no less meaningful in its symbolism. It’s a way for people to remember the brave men and women in the Canadian Forces who put their lives on the line every day, and we are honoured to have had the opportunity to be a part of this new designation.

If you find yourself driving this stretch of highway, watch for the sign and take a moment to think about the sacrifices our heroes have made.
