  1. New traffic lights at the east end of the Haney Bypass. The new left hand turn lane going eastbound is a long lane. Today there were 17 cars in that turn lane. 5 cars get through on the short light and that is the only opportunity to turn. Previously there was an advance green that turned into a normal green and cars could advance when there was a break.
    I get that this needs to be safer but why with a 17 car lane would the light be so short. Since it parallels the westbound advance green on to the Haney Bypass which is much longer why can’t he light be longer? Traffic eastbound and westbound was about equal at 2 o’clock this afternoon. Can you look into adjusting this to reflect the traffic load?

I note that the mandate letters of the new Minister of Transportation and the new Minister of State for Infrastructure make no mention whatsoever of the Kamloops to Alberta Program or the Trans-Canada Highway east of the Fraser Valley. So should we expect that the upgrades to the 2 lane sections of the highway will be on the back burner for the next 4 years?

    • Hello Nick – thanks for your comment. Work to four-lane between Kamloops and the Alberta border will continue to be a focus of this new government, despite no direct mention in the recent mandate letters.

  3. I wonder, does the new Minister of Transportation have any personal experience of the highways beyond Hope? Particularly in winter conditions.

  4. I live in Victoria BC, in the neighborhood of Gordon Head. There is new traffic light that has been installed at an intersection where it feels like it takes forever for the light to change so the non-main road traffic can go. So far, there have been some backups on the non-main road and the light stays red even when there is no oncoming traffic from the main road. I am wondering, if it is at all possible, if this light could be looked into? It is the corner of Shelbourne and Torquay right in front of a little market known as Mount Doug Market and Saanich Plaza. The closest address to the intersection would be the Market; 4104 Torquay Dr, Victoria, BC. Please let me know if you require further information.

  5. Traffic lights aren’t a good solution for intersections on the main transportation route to the rest of Canada, which carries thousands of transport trucks a day. Here is an example from Salmon Arm
    Unfortunately, there is no prospect of the highway being upgraded to eliminate the need for traffic lights. However red light cameras might help reduce the problem. I note from the news report that the Ministry will think about Salmon Arm’s request for a red light camera some time in the future. Will it take a few fatalities to ‘justify’ their installation?

  6. For driving from Vancouver to Vernon, bc is winter tire mandatory?
    Can I go with all seadon tires?
    Also is having a chain enough or must be just winter tire?

    • Good morning Delnaz,

      Thanks for your question. A legal winter tire (on a standard passenger vehicle or a four-wheel/all-wheel vehicle) MUST have at least 3.5 mm of tread depth.

      A winter tire must be labelled with either of the following:

      The letters “M” and “S”, the minimum legal requirement (mud + snow/all season tires)
      The 3-peaked mountain/snowflake symbol (some manufacturers label with both the mountain snowflake and the M+S symbol)

      3-peaked mountain/snowflake tires offer better traction on snow and ice. We recommend drivers install 3-peaked mountain/snowflake tires for cold weather driving and, for extreme conditions, carry chains.

    I had just sent a message earlier today and must thank you for making a timely reply. In the reply you state that ” all three of our traveller information systems are down and are in the process of being fixed ” . I have to ask what are the three traveller information systems that are all down at the same time ? At this point with all systems being down would it be that the entire province is currently receiving broadcasts pertaining to Spring Conditions rather than Winter Conditions ?

    • Hello Gordon – thanks for your message. This message refers to the other systems within the Kootenay region. We weren’t advised on the particulars of the issue, only that they were hopeful that the issue would be resolved shortly and in the meantime, any messaging around safe driving is considered better than none.         It seems you did not understand the question I submitted ” what are the other traveller information systems ” When you say that you were not advised / are you saying not advised by TranBC or by another third party like a contractor / YRB ??

        Unfortunately your answer has really not provided any accurate information pertaining the the original question asked and has quite honestly raised many more questions.

        For you to point out any information is better than none you may want to consider the ramifications of providing inaccurate ( not even the correct season ) to the public as a governmental agency in today’s legal environment.

        • Good morning Gordon – sorry if our response confused you. The other traveller information systems are the radio systems which broadcast pre-recorded safety messaging. We weren’t advised about what was causing the trouble with these systems – only that our staff are aware of the issue and working to fix it as soon as possible.     It is important to have timely and accurate information provided by the MOT / Drive BC.
    Currently in the Central Kootenay Area there is a radio broadcast that provides information on local highways. This information is broadcast on the FM Band at 96.7 on a continuous repeating loop and is stated to be provided by the MOT.
    The information currently being broadcast pertains to Spring driving conditions and gives suggestions for those conditions where in fact we have been dealing with serious Winter conditions for some time on the Kootenay Pass, the Bombi Pass and the Paulson Pass and most other roads in the area.

    A suggestion might be to change these types of announcements to point out Winter conditions to coincide with the regulations concerning Winter Tire use ( Oct 1 – April 30 ) and the Shift Into Winter awareness program. This change would provide more accurate and meaningful information than is currently being provided.
